Accutane and Crohn’s Disease

Accutane is a powerful acne medication that was prescribed to thousands of patients between its approval in 1982 and the time it was pulled from the markets in 2009. It has been linked to thousands of cases of inflammatory bowel disease and hundreds of subsequent lawsuits filed by those who have suffered the severe side effects of the drug. Some plaintiffs in have already won significant settlements for their Accutane lawsuit, but hundreds of others are still pending in courts across the country.
What is Crohn’s disease?
Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition that affects the digestive tract; it causes inflammation in its lining. It can affect any portion of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the rectum; it can be associated with the development of painful ulcers. There is no cure for Crohn’s disease, so treatment revolves around the management and maintenance of its symptoms and improving the patient’s quality of life. Symptoms vary significantly from patient to patient, but can include weight loss, diarrhea with no known cause, inflammation around the eyes or mouth, chronic abdominal pain and cramping, rectal bleeding, fatigue, and low grade fever.
Dietary restrictions, medication, and surgery can all be used to help manage the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, but symptoms often recur in a patient for life. These treatments are not always completely effective and sometimes may not be effective at all. Most patients who have Crohn’s disease will continue to experience at least some of its painful and embarrassing symptoms on and off throughout their entire lifetime.
Adverse side effects lead to lawsuit
Many patients who experience debilitating and painful Accutane side effects may choose to file suit against Swiss drug maker Hoffman-La Roche. Some of these lawsuits have already seen trial, at which a few plaintiffs have won millions of dollars to compensate for their injuries. Most people who have filed one of these lawsuits are simply seeking financial compensation so that they can handle the medical bills, lost wages, and other costs that are a consequence of their Accutane side effects.
